About 6,000 friends and family attended the College of Public Service and Community Solutions Fall 2016 Convocation at Comerica Theatre in downtown Phoenix on December 13. The 330 graduates taking part in the ceremony were from the School of Community Resources and Development, School of Criminology and Criminal Justice, School of Public Affairs, School of Social Work, and students from the College’s online graduate degree programs, including Public Safety Leadership and Administration and Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

An Arizona State University research team is developing a new way to respond to offshore oil spills. Under the direction of College of Public Service and Community Solutions professor Tony Grubesic, researchers are creating a response system that allows input from citizens, business owners, government officials and other stakeholders. The participatory-design software will help responders minimize the ecological and economic damage caused by deep water oil spills.  

In 1833, a young college student was challenged to not just talk about helping the poor in Paris, but to demonstrate what he was doing personally. The next day, he delivered a food box to a needy family. That became the foundation for The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, today an international nonprofit organization that serves the poor and provides others with the opportunity to serve.

On Nov. 5, more than 150 students, faculty, staff and supporters from the Arizona State University College of Public Service and Community Solutions joined this cause for a Day of Service.

Too often, new public service efforts discharge fireworks upon launch, followed by cricket songs rather than programming and progress. We join hands, stand awkwardly behind a podium, and boast of grandiose vision and innovative partnerships. We cut ribbons or ceremoniously shovel dirt. Then, not that much happens.
