Faculty Highlights

Faculty members at HAITC are involved in important projects and research on issues that span the disciplines of parks, recreation, tourism, public administration, emergency management, and public service and policy. Projects engage students and community members in topics relevant to sustainable development, stewardship, within the public, private, and non-profit sectors.

• Jong-Hyeong Kim published four articles in SSCI journals: “Evolution of the memorable tourism experience and future research prospects” in Journal of Travel Research, “Can nostalgia-themed stimuli predict customer loyalty and continued patronage?” in International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, “Examining the influence of multiple dimensions of authentic dining experiences” in The Service Industries Journal, and “How names and shapes correspond to the nature of products: An evaluation of auspicious foods” in Asia Pacific Journal of Marketing and Logistics.
• Jong-Hyeong Kim received ASU ISSR seed grant for a project with a title, “Novelty as determinants of visiting intention: An eye-tracking study”.
• Jeff Downey, as part of a Teaching Innovation Grant, has developed a management workshop with a local business for his CRD 401 – Managing Tourism and Leisure Enterprises course.  He will be piloting the workshop this fall with two sections of CRD 401.
• Dr. Yu-Hua Xu and her student, Lan-Yu Zhang, conducted a pedagogical experiment on the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in tourism education. Supported by the HAITC Teaching Innovation Grant, their findings were presented at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Tourism Association (APTA) conference. The research recommends that educators encourage responsible use of GenAI among students and pay attention to gender differences.
• Bruno Ferreira and Adriana Szabo presented a paper at the 16^th Conference of the European Sociological Association in Porto, Portugal on "Tension and Transformations in a Mining Community post-UNESCO Recognition – the case of Roșia Montană, Romania"
• Adriana Szabo presented a paper at the 16th Conference of the European Sociological Association in Porto, Portugal on "Corrosive Communities: Tension and (Mis)Trust in Anticipation of Technological Disasters" with co-authors Tom E. Shriver (NC State University) and Alison E. Adams (University of Florida)
• Adriana Szabo is also a co-recipient of the Watts IDEA mini-grant with Kimberly Peterkin (she is the lead).

• Hyewon Youn published an article in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, titled "The influence of ethnic food and its visual presentation on customer

• Yunseon Choe has co-authored two new papers: "From the classroom to the Living Lab for developing competencies in tourism higher education" and "Determinants of cultural heritage tourism demands: Learning in cultural heritage tourism destination" published in Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism Education (IF2023 4.8). • Xiao Xiao has published a new paper: “Sustainable adaptation planning for cultural heritage in coastal tourism destinations under climate change: a mixed-paradigm of preservation and conservation optimization” in Journal of Travel Research. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/00472875221143479
• Xiao Xiao has been awarded as co-PI with PI Dr. Erin Seekamp at NCSU for a research project: “Examining Diverse Management Objectives and Broadening Stakeholder Engagement for Climate Adaptation Planning of Historic Structures Stewarded by the National Park Service” from Southeast Climate Adaptation Center, US Geological Survey ($399,175, 09/01/2022 → 08/31/202525).
• Junyu Lu published a paper entitled “Bridging systems thinking mindsets and farm management: The role of agricultural conservation planning in farmers’ adoption of conservation practices” in Journal of Rural Studies (IF: 5.1) in 2024. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jrurstud.2024.103372
• Junyu Lu and Xiao Xiao published a paper entitled “Big data insights into urban park use in the pandemic: Changes in visitation patterns and exacerbated social inequalities in the U.S.” in Cities (IF: 6.0) in 2024. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cities.2024.105204
• Junyu Lu advised two undergraduate students Xuecong Fan and Miaoxi Qiu in HAITC and published a paper in Journal of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism in 2023. This paper has been rated as the Highly Cited Paper (1%) by Web of Science. It received more than 100 citations in Google Scholar. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jort.2022.100522
• Annus Azhar has published four articles this year, three appearing in Public Administration Quarterly and one in Social Indicators Research. The titles of these articles are: “Budgeting System and Economic Development Outcomes,” “Service Delivery during Crisis: The Impact of Organizational Capacity and Public Service Motivation on Governments’ Resilience,” “Collaboration, Capacity, and Cross-Sector Governance: An Analysis of the Adoption of Sustainable Technologies,” and “Poverty Dynamics: How Well Do Pakistan’s Provinces Compare?” He received a Teaching Innovation Award from the HAITC, and the AI Innovation Challenge awarded by Arizona State University. Additionally, he was selected for an editorial board position with Public Integrity.
