As a student in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions, there are multiple study abroad programs available to you. Each program specializes on a focus area, and those who are interested in participating in these programs are encouraged to visit the ASU Study Abroad website for more information, as well as search for relevant scholarships.

Introducing the Watts Study Abroad Scholarship! 

The Watts Study Abroad Scholarship was created in order to help encourage students to take advantage of Study Abroad opportunities. This scholarship is open to all undergraduate students enrolled in any major within the Watts College. Students must be eligible for in-state tuition and have a GPA of 2.8 or above. Preference will be given for first- generation college students and those with high financial need.

ASU Botswana: Sustainability, Wildlife and Conservation in the Okavango Delta 

sponsored by the School of Community Resources and Development

Location: Maun, Botswana

Maun: Maun is the tourism capital of Botswana and jumping-off point for adventures into the Okavango Delta. Students will stay in safari rest camps near the Thamalakane River, experience the local culture and prepare to fly into the remote research station in the Delta.

Okavango Delta Field Station: From Maun, we travel to the remote field station deep in the Okavango Delta. The Delta is one of the world’s hotspots of biodiversity and a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is home to the largest population of wild elephants in Africa as well as zebras, giraffes, lions, hippos, leopards, cape buffalo and more. The Delta lies at the end of one of the world’s last large free-flowing rivers and this extensive wetland system is home to diverse water bird populations and vegetation communities.

ASU: British  Roots of the U.S. Criminal Justice System

Location: London, United Kingdom

LONDON: London's many celebrated historical sites include Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Trafalgar Square. Its museums and galleries contain collections of unparalleled scope, and its theater companies are the finest in the world. In addition, London offers a number of specialized museums relevant to the course, including the Tower of London (a fortress that became a place of imprisonment and execution under the Tudors) and the Clink Prison Museum.

ASU: Kenya: The Role of Tourism and Park Management in Sustainable Community Development

sponsored by the School of Community Resources and Development

Location: Nairobi, Ol Pejeta, Naivasha, and Masai Mara, Kenya

Explore much of what Kenya has to offer, from the vast plains of the Masai Mara teeming with diverse wildlife to the shimmering waters of Lake Naivasha nestled at the base of Mount Longonot. We will experience wildlife up close during a walking safari, see the world's last two northern white rhinos and listen to stories of our Masai safari guides. We will stay at a conservation center by Lake Naivasha, where we will contribute to the center's ongoing community projects. We will visit and learn from global non-profits and local tourism, wildlife and community experts. You will foster an orphan baby elephant and leave with academic experiences that will change you forever.

ASU: Norway Lights the Way in Revolutionary Correctional Practices

Location: Oslo and Bergen, Norway

NORWAY: Oslo is he capital of Norway and is an eco-conscious city with 693,494 inhabitants and is known to locals as “the Tiger City”. It is situated at 59 degrees parallel to the Northern Hemisphere which causes the daylight to vary greatly, from more than 18 hours in midsummer when it never gets completely dark. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway by population.
and is famous as “the heart of the fjords” and also for being one of the rainiest cities in Europe.

GIE: Eco-Tourism in Baja, Mexico: Can Watching Whales Save the Turtles?

Location: La Paz, Mexico

LA PAZ: La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja and the Mexican city with the highest standard of living and safety rating. Its beautiful boardwalk hugs the Sea of Cortez, which is one of the most biologically diverse bodies of water on the planet, home to more than 900 species of fish, thousands of species of invertebrates and a wide array of marine mammals like sea lions, dolphins turtles, whales and whale sharks. Jacques Cousteau referred to Sea of Cortez as the world’s aquarium.

GIE: Gender and Criminal Justice in Cross-National Contexts

Location: Washington, DC, United States

WASHINGTON, DC: Washington, DC, is the epicenter of the United States and the U.S. capital. It is a compact city on the Potomac River, bordering the states of Maryland and Virginia. It is defined by imposing neoclassical monuments and buildings – including the iconic ones that house the federal government’s three branches: the Capitol, White House and Supreme Court. It's also home to iconic museums and performing-arts venues such as the Kennedy Center.

GIE: Pathways to Global Social Work

sponsored by the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions

Location: Sonora, Mexico

HERMOSILLO: Travel to Hermosillo, Mexico for a service learning opportunity of a lifetime!  You will be exposed to Sonoran culture and learn how social services are developed and provided in this country.  The program will include visits to local community programs, participation in workshops discussing a variety of social work topics, and site visits in the community. You will be immersed in the culture, history, economy and people of the region through a partner university, Universidad the Sonora in Hermosillo.
