School of Public Affairs director Donald Siegel elected dean of fellows of prestigious Academy of Management
Donald Siegel, Foundation Professor of Public Policy and Management and director of the School of Public Affairs (SPA), has been elected dean of the Fellows of the Academy of Management (AOM). Siegel is the first ASU faculty member to achieve this distinction. AOM is a global professional association of more than 20,000 academics who teach management.
Siegel will assume the deanship on Sept. 1, succeeding Professor Jean Bartunek of Boston College’s Carroll School of Management.
“I am honored to serve as dean of the AOM fellows,” Siegel said. “One of the new stated goals of the Academy of Management is to have a greater influence on public policy. I hope to steer this group in that direction, since AOM Fellows are the leading management scholars in the world and can advise governments on the managerial dimensions of public policy.”
In naming fellows, the Academy of Management recognizes and honors those “who have made significant contributions to the science and practice of management, and to provide opportunities for fellowship and a forum for discussion among persons so recognized and honored,” according to the AOM website.
AOM members are in more than 120 countries. Only about 1 percent of AOM members are named as fellows. Three other ASU faculty members are AOM fellows.
Siegel, who was elected an AOM fellow in 2016, joined the SPA faculty in 2017. SPA is ranked 19th in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report. The school is also ranked in the top 10 in the nation in six categories: third in emergency management and homeland security, third in local government management, fifth in urban policy, sixth in public management and leadership, eighth in environmental policy and ninth in nonprofit management.
From 2008 to 2016, Siegel served as dean of the School of Business at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics and his master’s and doctoral degrees in business economics from Columbia University. He then served as a Sloan Foundation post-doctoral fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Siegel has also taught at SUNY-Stony Brook, the University of Nottingham, RPI, where was he was chair of the economics department, and the University of California-Riverside, where he served as associate dean for graduate studies.
Siegel is an editor of the Journal of Management Studies and the Journal of Technology Transfer, a former co-editor of Academy of Management Perspectives, an associate editor of the Journal of Productivity Analysis and a former associate editor of the Journal of Business Venturing and Academy of Management Learning and Education.
He has published 128 journal articles and 13 books on issues relating to university technology transfer and entrepreneurship, the effects of corporate governance on performance, productivity analysis, the economic effects of gambling and corporate and environmental social responsibility. His citation count, according to Google Scholar, is 54,557 (h-index: 97). He currently serves as co-chair of a National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine Committee on “Advancing Commercialization from the Federal Laboratories.”
SPA is part of ASU’s Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions.
