FAQs
Is the scholarship renewable?
No, this is a one-year program.
What will I learn and do in this program?
Scholars will learn skills related to advocacy, public engagement, and civic leadership, and practice these capacities as part of teams that will plan and present a community workshop on a public interest topic. Students will select the topics for the workshops at the beginning of the Fall semester.
Students will also receive one-on-one mentoring support from a community mentor who will be assigned based on each student's professional and leadership development goals and aspirations.
Who will be my mentor?
Mentors are local luminaries with experience in the service sector. Some are government officials, some are nonprofit executives, and some are private professionals with a deep interest in government or nonprofit affairs. Mentors are assigned based on each student's professional and leadership development goals and aspirations.
What are the time commitments?
Scholars must enroll in a one-credit course each semester, which meets Friday mornings from 9:00 to 10:15 am in the Fall and Spring. This closed course section is uniquely designed for Spirit of Service Scholars and facilitates the seminar and mentorship activities.
Apart from the weekly class meetings, scholars will meet to plan their public interest workshops with their team members in the Fall and Spring semesters. Each scholars will also schedule at minimum 2-3 meetings with their assigned mentor each semester.
Finally, scholars must be able to attend seven Saturday morning seminars during the academic year, and are required to attend the annual Spirit of Service Scholars fundraising event in September.
