Andrew Goodman Foundation – Vote Everywhere at ASU

About

Vote Everywhere is a unique, experiential, nonpartisan program inspired by and modeled after Freedom Summer 1964: a pivotal campaign in the Civil Rights Movement that empowered college students to take leading roles in the struggle for social justice. Through Vote Everywhere, The Andrew Goodman Foundation (AGF) honors and continues this legacy by training college students to register voters and pursue campaigns for change in their communities. Vote Everywhere has developed a national community of campus leaders who engage, educate, and mobilize their peers to take collective action.

In the spirit of Andrew Goodman -- a college student who was one of three civil rights workers murdered by the Klan for attempting to register black Mississippians during Freedom Summer 1964 - Vote Everywhere Ambassadors take action to solve today’s pressing social justice issues. Vote Everywhere Ambassadors register voters, equip their peers with civic tools and information, and lead issue-based campaigns and social justice projects that impact their college community and beyond. Vote Everywhere provides emerging leaders with the education, skills, support, and platform necessary to continue the march toward freedom and democracy.

The Vote Everywhere Ambassadorship is structured as a multi-year commitment that allows students to build strategic organizing skills and to advocate for their community's voting and civil rights throughout their academic career. Vote Everywhere Ambassadors receive training on leadership, voter engagement, community-organizing and campaigning. To support their work, Ambassadors receive a $2000 stipend each year, as well as ongoing mentorship via The AGF’s network of social change leaders.

Meet Andy

At the height of the Civil Rights Movement, 20-year-old Andrew Goodman joined the Freedom Summer Project of 1964 to register Black Americans to vote. On his first day in Mississippi, the Ku Klux Klan murdered Andy and two other civil rights workers, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner. Their murders catalyzed a movement to oppose white supremacy and voter suppression throughout the United States and led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Founded by his parents Robert and Carolyn Goodman to carry on his legacy, The Andrew Goodman Foundation’s mission is to make young voices and votes a powerful force in democracy by training young leaders, engaging high-potential voters, and challenging restrictive voter suppression laws.
