Marie Provine
Professor Provine came to ASU in 2001 to direct the School of Justice Studies (now School of Social Transformation) after almost three decades as a professor of political science at Syracuse University. She has always mixed art and photography with her academic scholarship, which focuses on race and inequality in the context of criminal justice and immigration. She is the author of various books and articles, including Unequal Under Law: Race in the War on Drugs, and most recently, co-authored Policing Immigrants: Local Law Enforcement on the Front Lines. Since retirement in 2011, Provine has had more time to focus on her art. She paints in pastel, watercolor, and especially oils, often sharing and occasionally selling her art. Her work can be seen in the Tempe Center for the Arts and the Tempe Public Library and was recently exhibited at the Heaven Gallery in Scottsdale. She is a member and officer of the Tempe Art Guild and a member of Portrait Artists of Arizona.
